How to Get to Pura Lempuyang from Seminyak, here a Local Host’s Guide. If you are staying in Seminyak and planning to visit Pura Lempuyang, one of the most important things I tell my guests is: start early.
Pura Lempuyang is located in Karangasem, on the eastern side of Bali, while Seminyak is in the south of the island. The journey is not a short one, but it is absolutely worth the effort, especially if you want to see the famous Gate of Heaven with Mount Agung in the background.
As a local host, I usually recommend allowing around 2.5 to 3.5 hours for the drive from Seminyak, depending on traffic, road conditions, and your exact starting point.
Let me walk you through the easiest way to get there.
Where Is Pura Lempuyang?
Pura Lempuyang is located in Abang District, Karangasem Regency, East Bali. The temple complex sits on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang and is one of Bali’s important Hindu temples.
Many visitors simply call it “Lempuyang Temple,” but there are several temples within the wider Lempuyang area.
For most international travelers, the main destination is Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang, where the famous split gate or “Gate of Heaven” is located.
The higher Pura Lempuyang Luhur is a different part of the temple complex and requires a considerably longer hike. The complete pilgrimage route can involve more than 1,700 steps.
How Far Is Lempuyang Temple from Seminyak?
From Seminyak, the road distance to the Lempuyang area is approximately 85–100 kilometers, depending on the route and destination within the temple complex.
In normal conditions, I recommend allowing approximately 3 hours each way rather than planning your schedule around the shortest possible driving time.
Bali traffic can change quickly. A journey that looks easy on a map can become much longer because of traffic, ceremonies, road works, or busy tourist areas.
That is why, when traveler ask me how early they should leave Seminyak, my answer is simple:
The earlier, the better.

The Main Route from Seminyak to Lempuyang
The usual route from Seminyak heads east and then north toward Karangasem.
A typical route is:
Seminyak → Sanur → Gianyar → Klungkung → Karangasem → Abang → Lempuyang
Another route can pass through the coastal road toward Candidasa and then continue inland toward Abang.
The exact route your driver chooses may change depending on traffic on the day of your trip.
How to Get to Pura Lempuyang from Seminyak
One of the enjoyable parts of this journey is that the scenery gradually changes. You leave the busy beach atmosphere of Seminyak, pass through villages and rice-field areas, and eventually arrive in the greener and more mountainous landscape of East Bali.
1. Go by Private Car with a Driver
For traveler staying in Seminyak, this is usually the option I recommend most.
A private car and driver gives you more flexibility and is much more comfortable for a long journey.
You don’t need to concentrate on Bali traffic, search for parking, or worry about navigation. Instead, you can relax, sleep for part of the journey, or ask your driver about the villages and temples you pass along the way.
A private driver is also useful if you want to combine Lempuyang with other East Bali attractions.
For example, a popular day-trip combination can include:
Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang
- Tirta Gangga Water Palace
- Taman Ujung
- Candidasa
- Traditional villages in Karangasem
This makes the long drive from Seminyak more worthwhile.
2. Join a Lempuyang Temple Tour
Another convenient option is booking a Lempuyang Temple tour from Seminyak.
This can be a good choice if you do not want to arrange transportation yourself.
Depending on the tour, transportation may pick you up directly from your hotel and take you to Lempuyang before continuing to other destinations in East Bali.
As a host, I suggest checking exactly what is included before booking.
Look for:
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Private or shared transportation
- Entrance fees
- Temple shuttle
- Driver or guide
- Other destinations included
- Lunch, if provided
- Duration of the tour
A well-planned tour can save you a lot of time because the transportation and daily itinerary are already organized.
3. Riding a Scooter from Seminyak
Technically, you can ride a scooter from Seminyak to Lempuyang.
However, I would only recommend this to experienced riders who are comfortable with long-distance riding in Bali.
The journey is long, and some roads toward East Bali and the temple area can be winding and steep. You also need to consider riding back to Seminyak after spending several hours sightseeing.
If you are not an experienced scooter rider, I would choose a private car instead.
For a long day trip like Lempuyang, comfort and safety are more important than saving money on transportation.
How Early Should You Leave Seminyak?

This is one of the questions I receive most often from guests.
If your priority is visiting the Gate of Heaven, I recommend leaving Seminyak very early.
A departure around 3:00–4:00 AM can be appropriate for travelers who want to arrive early, although the exact departure time should be adjusted according to the current temple arrangements and your planned itinerary.

Why so early?
Because you are dealing with three things:
Distance + Bali traffic + visitor queues.
Leaving early also gives you more time to enjoy the area without feeling rushed.
The early morning atmosphere around Lempuyang can be beautiful, with cooler temperatures, mountain air, and the possibility of mist around Mount Agung.
However, remember that Mount Agung is a natural landscape. Even if you arrive early, I cannot promise that the mountain will be visible. Clouds and mist are completely dependent on weather conditions.
What Happens When You Arrive at Lempuyang?
When you arrive at the lower parking area, your car does not normally take you directly to the temple entrance.
Visitors use a local shuttle service to continue toward the temple area because the road is steep and winding. Current visitor information lists the shuttle at around IDR 50,000 per person, Entrance ticket is IDR 60,000 per person, although fees and arrangements can change.
After arriving, you will enter a sacred temple environment.
This is important: Lempuyang is not simply a photo attraction.
It is an active Hindu temple.
You may see local Balinese people coming to pray, make offerings, or participate in religious ceremonies. As your host, I always ask guests to treat the temple with respect.
Do I Need to Climb the 1,700 Steps?
This depends on which part of Lempuyang you want to visit.
If your main goal is the famous Gate of Heaven at Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang, you do not need to complete the entire pilgrimage to Pura Lempuyang Luhur.
The much longer climb of approximately 1,700 steps is associated with continuing toward the higher temples and Lempuyang Luhur.
So, when guests ask me, “Do I need to climb 1,700 steps just to take the famous Lempuyang photo?” my answer is:
No, not for the main Gate of Heaven visit.
However, you should still expect some walking and stairs around the temple.
What Should You Wear?
Because Lempuyang is a sacred Hindu temple, visitors should dress respectfully.
I recommend:
- Clothing covering the shoulders
- Clothing that covers the knees
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A sarong if required
- A light jacket for the early morning
- A hat or sunscreen for later in the day
- Drinking water
If you are wearing shorts or clothing that is not suitable for temple entry, you may be asked to use a sarong.
Most importantly, please follow the instructions of the temple staff and local guides.
Best Time to Visit Lempuyang from Seminyak
For photography, I personally prefer an early morning visit.
The early hours can provide:
- Cooler temperatures
- Softer morning light
- Less heat
- Better conditions for a long day trip
- A chance of seeing Mount Agung before clouds build up
The iconic Gate of Heaven is famous because the split gate can frame Mount Agung beautifully when the weather is clear.
But I always tell my guests not to expect an identical photo every day.
Sometimes Mount Agung is perfectly visible.
Sometimes there is mist.
Sometimes clouds cover the mountain.
And sometimes the atmosphere is even more dramatic because of the clouds.
That is part of visiting Bali’s mountains.
